GhillieSuits.com is a family business that began in 1999 with Todd's first handmade ghillie suit. Today we offer ghillie suits, 3D leafy suits and build-your-own camouflage supplies for hunters and other field users.
Built by a Hunter Who Needed Better Gear
In 1999, Todd built his first ghillie suit because he hunts, and he wanted to see how the snipers did it. He tied strips of burlap onto a netting base, shoe-gooed the netting to a BDU jacket, and once everything was tied on, pulled out the horizontal threads by hand to get the loose, frayed look that makes a ghillie suit actually work in the field.
"I found a company that sold spools, and made a purchase. Designed a machine to unspool the thread, and cut those to lengths to tie on."
That first suit ate through more burlap than it used, over half of what he bought ended up as scrap on the floor. So Todd found a supplier that sold burlap by the spool, bought some, and built his own machine to unspool it and cut it to length automatically instead of doing it by hand.
The first suit was his. The second was for a friend who wanted one just like it. Then another friend wanted one. Todd put a suit on eBay to see if anyone outside his circle wanted one too, and the orders started coming in faster than he could make them.
A Family Business From the Start
Before GhillieSuits.com, Todd worked a corporate job that kept him away from home more than he wanted. Once the business started taking shape in the garage, that changed, but only because his wife Tracy made it possible. She went to night school for tax prep and worked the night shift so Todd could be home during the day to build the business.
Their daughter Charlotte, born in 1992, remembers those garage afternoons well; tying knots of jute thread by hand after school, not because she had to, but because it meant time with her dad. That's the honest version of how this company started: not a business plan, but a hunter who needed better gear, and a family who rearranged their own lives to help him build it.
Where We Are Today
That machine built to keep up with a few friends' orders is why GhillieSuits.com exists. We still build concealment gear the way Todd started: made to actually work in the field, not just look the part.
Today it's still a small, hands-on team. Todd runs day-to-day operations out of the warehouse and HQ in Tennessee, alongside one other team member. A family out in California helps make suits as well. Tracy is a proud part-owner and full-time supporter of the business. Add to that patented designs, a dealer program for retailers who want to carry the line, and discounts for the military and law enforcement customers who depend on this gear for real work, not just the hunt.
